Welcome Message For Our Website

Welcome to the Archdiocese of Mandalay

Dear Friends in Christ,

Welcome to our site in Mandalay!  Mandalay Archdiocese is in the dry zone of Myanmar.  It comprises of three large divisions in the heart of the country.  Here Buddhist faith is vibrant and the values of life and culture rich.  It is in this context and atmosphere that we have Catholics living their Christian lives.

The Catholic community forms a mere 30,000 –a minority amidst the immense population of approximately 15 million.  But the community has a unique origin.  At the beginning of the 17th century, a Portuguese community of merchants and soldiers already existed in Thanlyn near Yangon.  When they fell into disfavor with the King of Ava in Central Myanmar, the King brought them up country and settled them down in scattered villages northwest of Mandalay.   The new-comers intermingled with the local inhabitants and adopted their way of life and livelihood.  Over the centuries they gradually imbibed the spiritual and practical values of Buddhism and the riches of Myanmar culture.  They are true citizens of Myanmar, as truly as their neighbors, while keeping their identity in faith and worship and way of thinking.

Mandalay Diocese is strategic in many ways.  If you want to go from north to south, from east to west, you have to pass through Mandalay.  For education and for commerce, it opens itself first to India, China and Thailand and then to the world.  It is at the crossroads! It is our hope that our Website will continue to update you on the life and pastoral work of the diocese. The Church in Mandalay has ideal opportunities for evangelization.

Transport and communication means are favorable.  Only one language is spoken.  Priests and religious and laity are numerous.  We ask your help of prayers, interest and support for this heartland of Myanmar.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop Paul Zinghtung Grawng

Archdiocese of Mandalay, Myanmar
